What are the benefits for expats working remotely from Spain?

Expats working remotely from Spain can make the most of many benefits, the warm and sunny climate being the obvious one, but also tax incentives, and a vibrant Spanish culture. The Lecrin Valley, being affordable, well connected and close to both the beaches and the wonderful city of Granada, is one of the best places to relocate if you’re looking to combine the Spanish climate, scenery and chilled way of life with the ability to work remotely.

Below are some key advantages of working from your place in the sun:

1. Quality of Life

  • Mediterranean Lifestyle: Spain offers a relaxed pace of life, excellent weather, and access to beautiful beaches, mountains, and historic cities.
  • Cost of Living: Compared to other Western European countries, Spain has a relatively lower cost of living, making it attractive for remote workers who can earn higher wages from foreign employers while spending less on essentials.
  • Healthcare: Spain’s healthcare system is ranked among the best globally, and expats often find it affordable and efficient. Most expats also take out private healthcare which is surprisingly affordable.

2. Remote Work Infrastructure

  • Co-working Spaces: Most cities have a growing number of co-working spaces and remote worker-friendly cafes. And Granada is one of them.
  • High-Speed Internet: Reliable and widely available internet connections make it easy to work from urban centres and many rural areas, including the Lecrin Valley where you’ll find internet is often better than you’ll find in much of the UK!
  • Time Zone:  Spain’s time zone (CET) aligns well with Europe and overlaps partially with North and South America, making it convenient for remote collaboration.

3. Tax Incentives

4. Cultural and Social Benefits

  • Cultural Richness: Spain offers diverse experiences with its festivals, arts, cuisine, and history, making it an enriching place to live and work.
  • Expat Communities and language Opportunities: Expats often find support and networking opportunities through established communities in many areas of Granada, including the Lecrin Valley and there are lots of opportunities to join intercambios (language groups) where expats and Spanish mix socially to practise each other’s languages.  There are several in our area and it’s a great way to learn or improve your Spanish skills, enhancing cultural integration and personal development.

5. Family-Friendly Environment

  • Education: Spain has high-quality international schools, making it a good choice for expats with families.
  • Safety: It is considered a safe country, which is a key consideration for many expats. You’ll find that the international and private schools in the area are also much more affordable than they are in the UK, for example.

6. Travel Opportunities

  • Proximity to Europe and Beyond: Spain’s location makes it easy to travel to other parts of Europe, North Africa, and beyond for both work and leisure.
  • Well-Connected Transport: Affordable domestic flights, high-speed trains, good (and largely empty!) motorways and a comprehensive bus network facilitate exploring the country during downtime.  While we don’t have a train line below Granada,  there are lots of trains to other places from Granada, to help you explore the region, and an extensive network of buses (generally they’re coaches, not buses as we know them) which go to the city, airports and coast. Cheap and air-conditioned, they’re a brilliant way to both get around in general and to explore.

Of course expats from EU countries don’t have to worry so much about visas and residency as non-EU expats do, but Spain is famous for its red tape and you will need to rely on someone who knows their way around the system to make sure you have all the right permissions in place. It’s definitely worth seeking out a tax or immigration consultant first, so you can make sure you are doing things the right way.

Good luck with your new life in the sun!  You won’t regret it.
